Small Q&A on See Short Films

Many thanks to Laura Anderson at See Short Films for putting Small Gifts up on her site along with a short Q&A.  (Click on the SSF logo above to see both). Laura herself is a busy and talented writer, actress, filmmaker and blogger.  You can follow her on Twitter  - @missread

OUT THERE promotional image

The promotional image for Out There, created by Andrei Staruiala, a feature script in development with director David Lumsden that's now been optioned by Blue Iris Films.  I'll be pitching the project to Execs at the London Screenwriters Festival later in the week.

Nice post from Breakneck Films

Well I've definitely read worse Facebook posts.  Thanks a lot Jo at Breakneck Films (www.breakneckfilms.com).  Looking forward to further developing the feature, Pandion with the Breakneck team.

Prion - quarterfinalist in the Bahamas International Film Festival Screenwriters Residency

Prion is a project that I've been developing, along with Director, David Lumsden and Producer, Andy Maas for some time. To date the script has travelled with Dave and Andy to Director / Producer Labs at the Edinburgh IFF and the Rotterdam IFF and later this year is off to the Toronto IFF. Just learned that it's through to the quarterfinals of the Bahamas International Film Festival's Screenwriter's Residency Programme - http://bit.ly/1ID6KXx.

At EIFF 2015 opening night

Full-on day yesterday - attended the Scottish Film Summit, then then later went to the 69th Edinburgh International Film Festival Opening Party and the screening of Robert Carlyle's, The Legend of Barney Thomson.  Met up with former Screen Academy Scotland pals, Laura Anderson and Mandy Lee.  Both excellent writers and Laura is now also turning her hand to acting.  She's in a new feature film (now in post) and is rehearsing a play about to be staged in Edinburgh (watch this space).

One of 26 writing for children charity, It's Good 2 Give

Pleased to be one of the 26 writers taking part in a winter charity exhibition of artefacts at the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh, which will run from early October 2015 to the end of March 2016. The exhibition will raise money for local children’s charity It’s Good 2 Give.

Multiple Choice

In 2011, my play, Multiple Choice, which deals with drug addicts, their families and the victims of drug related crime, ran for two weeks at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where the actors, Alan MacKenzie, Christina Strachan, Tav McDougall, Gem Sian Ruzzak, and Susan Coyle, and the director, John Yule, all did a great job. Since then, John and I have allowed the play to be performed by an amateur group from ARIA - Arts Recovery in Alba - "an alliance of people in recovery from active alcoholism and addiction" - and they've been working hard to get it and its messages in front of appropriate audiences. Various Scottish Prisons have now agreed to stage it (I hope none of you are able to attend) and we are awaiting confirmation of venues and dates.

Their next show will be at North Edinburgh Arts Centre, Pennywell Road on 10th April -  http://www.northedinburgharts.co.uk.

David Lumsden's BOAT

A while back, I began working with director, David Lumsden on the feature, Prion.

One of the things that convinced me to do so was seeing what he'd been able to do with his brilliant short (then in post) - BOAT.

Click on the poster to see the trailer, and if you can, go see its premier on 12th March at the Glasgow Short Film Festival -

http://www.glasgowfilm.org/gsff

Manike Music / Chinese album available on audionetwork

The original music for two of the short films I've written, 'Small Gifts' and 'Plagium' was composed by MaryAnn and Michael Tedstone, aka www.manikemusic.com.  Here's a small video of them recording their Chinese New Year Album, the music from which is available for use in TV and Film from Audio Network - http://www.audionetwork.com - http://bit.ly/1z6CKTq

Duncan Finnigan and 12 Angry Filmmakers

A few years back, my filmmaking pal Duncan Finnigan left these sunny Scottish shores for a new beginning in Kitchener, Canada.  Duncan was always a silver-tongued, busy man (he even persuaded me to appear in a cameo in his 2007 feature, My Life As A Bus Stop - he was desperate).  With his can-do attitude there was never any doubt he would continue where he left off.  He's now part of a group, '12 Angry Filmmakers', a collection of like-minded, Kitchener filmmakers who "are pursuing connection, collaboration and creativity as a community that make films that matter."  Duncan tells me that this year, he and the team plan to make "five plus one features" (he says with his accent, over there he can't say six because it sounds like sex).  Click on the image above to see their cracking short, Buckfast, along with links to more of their work.

London Screenwriters' Festival 2015

Booked up for the LSF 2015.  Should be good.

Feature film in development with Breakneck Films.

Lovely Facebook post this morning from Breakneck Films (www.breakneckfilms.com).  Thanks, Jo.

Fortitude

Earlier this year, with my 'advisor's' hat on, I played a small part assisting writer and friend, Simon Donald, and prod co, Tiger Aspect, with the forthcoming series 'Fortitude'.  These great promo stills show the high quality of cast - Stanley Tucci, Sofie Grabol, Christopher Eccleston, Michael Gambon and Richard Dormer.  Show's going to be a cracker and starts, January, 2015 on Sky Atlantic.

Script available and ready for further development

JUST CAUSE was selected by Amazon Studios earlier this year for inclusion on their Notable Projects Page at http://studios.amazon.com (Review > All Movie Projects > Notable Projects).  It also reached the final stage (45 scripts from almost 3,000) in the BBC Script Room 4 submission process.  Any Producers / Directors interested in a thriller script that's ready for (and needs) some development can download it from the Amazon site and get in touch through the contacts page on this site.

Multiple Choice now being performed within Scottish Prisons

In 2011, Multiple Choice, played at the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe and The Byre Theatre, St Andrews.  The play examines the effect of drug abuse, not only on the users, but also on their loved ones and the victims of their crimes. A former school-teacher and addict, who had been an audience member, later approached me asking if he could use the play to reach out to addicts.

I'm very pleased that as a result, the Aria Theatre Co, part of Arts Recovery in Alba (http://www.aria2014.co.uk) have now begun to stage their production within selected Scottish Prisons.  Feedback from a staff member at Addiewell Prison included:

"The play was well received by the prisoners and staff you could’ve heard a pin drop. Each and every individual who attended could relate their own life story to the play and the characters, they found it to be very realistic."

Interview with Miriam Grace Lee for Projection

Last month, The Neighbours, was one of three films that won the audience award at the Shorts on Tap event in London.  As a result, Miriam Grace Lee was kind enough to get in touch and asked to do an interview.  Miriam is an American now based in London who writes the Projection film blog.  Click on the image of Peter Mullan in the still from The Neighbours to read the interview , and click on the image of Miriam to go to the blog.

Ad in i-On Magazine for Edinburgh Napier University

An ad in April's i-On Magazine / Edinburgh for Edinburgh Napier University.  Two corrections - the main one being that Frank won an Emmy for Prime Suspect, not a Grammy, and it should be Carolynne Sinclair Kidd, not Caroline.

Just Cause through to final stage of BBC Writersroom / Script Room 4

Pleased to hear that the feature script, JUST CAUSE, is through to the final stage of the BBC Writersroom / Script Room 4 submissions process (45 scripts from almost 3,000 submissions).  It's also been selected by Amazon Studios for their 'Notable Projects' page.

The Neighbours - one of three best films at Shorts on Tap event, Juno, London.

Chuffed that The Neighbours, starring the brilliant Vicki Masson and Peter Mullan was one of three short films selected by the Shorts on Tap jury panel at Juno, London, on Tuesday night.

Something different

Nice to hear that, The Grind (a journal of fiction and visual art for Scotland and its diaspora), are publishing two poems of mine in their 2nd Issue.  Click on the image to be taken to their website.
