Tom Hardy gets stuck into James Deegan's, Once a Pilgrim

A few posts back I mentioned my good pal, James
Deegan's new novel, Once a Pilgrim.  Delighted to
see that Tom Hardy is getting stuck into his copy.

Looking forward to being out at the Berlinale.
Be there between 16th and 19th February with
Chris Patterson from Irish production company,
Causeway Pictures, with a new project in development.

Talking about the European Genre Forum at the Glas

On 1st March, Director, David Lumsden, Producer, Katie Crook from Blue Iris Films and myself will be speaking at the Glasgow Film Festival about our experiences on the 2017 European Genre Forum process and the development of our horror feature, Out There.

Out There at the European Genre Forum 2017

Just back from the final stage of the European Genre Forum 2017. A year long process involving labs in Amsterdam, Zagreb and Tallinn. A fantastic initiative during which eight selected European filmmaking teams developed their feature films, made great contacts and lasting new friends.  Out There now has onboard an experienced Exec Producer and Co-Producers.  Applications are now open for 2018. Get in there now before this is something else that we'll lose access to as a result of Brexit.

Torn screens at Filmhouse, Edinburgh

Torn was screened last night during the 'Write Shoot Cut' quarterly screening at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh.  Although I couldn't be there, it seems the film went down very well and it's great to see the positive comments coming through on social media this morning.

Fantastic debut novel from James Deegan MC

"JAMES DEEGAN MC is a fantastic new voice in the thriller genre, writing with unprecedented authority and authenticity."
James Deegan has been a friend for many years and I'm delighted to see his debut novel beginning to make waves. No-one knows about the world in which his story is based better than him. Released 25th Jan, pre-order here

If you're on Twitter, follow James at @jamesdeeganMC

DoP Nicola Daley attached to Pandion.

Very pleased  that award winning Cinematographer, Nicola Daley ASC, ( is now
attached to our feature, Pandion.
Nicola’s latest feature, Pin Cushion, directed by Deborah Haywood and funded by the BFI, is about to receive its World Premiere at the Venice International Film Festivalwhere it will screen out of competition, opening the independent parallel strand Critics’ Week.

Out There - 2nd stage, European Genre Forum

Good luck to Director, David Lumsden and Producer, Katie Crook (Blue Iris Films) who arrived in Zagreb, today to begin the 2nd stage of the European Genre Forum development process with our feature project, Out There.

Fun appearing on the Janice Forsyth Show

Great fun yesterday appearing on BBC Radio Scotland's Janice Forsyth Show which was broadcast live from the Oxford Bar in Edinburgh. The main reason was to talk about my friendship with novelist, Ian Rankin, who was also there along with novelist, Lin Anderson, celebrating 30 years since Ian's first 'Rebus' novel.

I was very pleased to find out that Janice is as lovely in person as she appears to be on radio and tv.  If anyone is at all interested in listening to it, click on the image of Janice and myself.

What Police Dramas (really have to) get wrong.

Click on the 'Line of Duty' image to read a short interview I was asked to do with inews on why I find most police dramas hard to watch.

Out There at the European Genre Forum.

Great week at  European Genre Forum ( in Amsterdam, where Director, David Lumsden, Producer, Katie Crook (Blue Iris Films - and myself presented, Out There.  New friends and contacts made and the project takes another step forward.  Next stops Zagreb and Tallin.

Out There selected for European Genre Forum

Delighted to hear that Out There has been selected as one of eight European feature projects in development to take part in the European Genre Forum (  Amsterdam, Zagreb and Tallin, here we come.

"European Genre Forum is a pan-european project organized by Black Nights Film Festival from Tallinn (among 15 world A festivals); Imagine Film Festival from Amsterdam (biggest festival for fantastic film in the Netherlands); Fantastic Zagreb Film Festival (largest genre festival in the SEE region) and film consultancy company Screen Division from Paris.

The main goal of this international project is to connect young and upcoming, as well as already proven, European film talents. Producers, directors, screenwriters and others i.e. development, promotion and financial support of film, television and web projects with a strong European and regional focus, as well as international co-productions beyond European framework through cooperation with European film funds, national film centers, production studios etc."

Out There - pitching at GFF

There's been a couple of positive developments with our feature, Out There, recently. And now we've been invited to pitch the project at the Open Pitch event at the Glasgow Film Festival on 23 Feb -  Katie Crook from Blue Iris and I will face the panel while director, David Lumsden is off filming in the Caribbean (lucky *******!!).  That's David and myself filming our bit for the video element of the pitch (evidence, if any were needed, that we belong behind the camera).

Breakneck Films documentary, #sugarwater

As we continue to develop our feature, Pandion, Breakneck Films are as busy as ever.  On Sunday I saw their excellent documentary feature, #Sugarwater, at the Glasgow Film Festival.  #Sugarwater is a behind the scenes look at deaf and disabled theatre company, Graeae ( and their staging of the play, The Solid Life of Sugar Water.  It's powerful stuff and well worth a viewing.

Torn in Hollywood

Pleased to hear that our short film, Torn, has been selected for the Mindfield Film Festival in Los Angeles. It's not a huge festival but an interesting aside is that it takes place at the Raleigh Studios in Hollywood where old classics like Perry Mason and Gunsmoke were filmed.

Brady Hood and Eva Riley, Screen International's Stars of Tomorrow, 2016

Really pleased to hear that Brady Hood, director of two of my short scripts (Small Gifts and Plagium - see 'short films') and Eva Riley, a fellow Screen Academy Scotland graduate, have both been named as Screen International's Stars of Tomorrow.  Couldn't have happened to two nicer folk.  Click on Brady's photo to read more.

Jeff Bernstein could be the composer you're looking for.

Jeff Bernstein is someone I hope to collaborate with in the not too distant future.  In the 80's, he was a member of the band, White China, today he's a composer, working from his studio in Fife and his work is perfectly suited to film.  If you're looking for a composer, have a look at Jeff's site and get in touch.

Great to hear that, Torn, is through to the finals of the Moving Pictures Festival in Antwerp and will be in competition on Friday night.

Like We Used To

A couple of screen grabs from the latest short, Like We Used To, directed by Monica Gonzalez-Carter and produced by Francesca Alber.

Out There - location recces begin

Great to have started location hunting with director, David Lumsden for our feature, Out There.  These two are looking good and we're off to see some probables on the Western Isles next month.
